GEO Readiness: What Actually Gets A Site Cited By ChatGPT And Perplexity

Short answer

AI engines cite pages that are structurally easy to lift an answer from, backed by third-party corroboration, and technically crawlable by AI-specific bots. Traditional SEO helps, but a page can rank #1 on Google and still never get quoted by ChatGPT if it isn't structured for extraction.

Most "AI SEO" content right now is recycled keyword-density advice with "GEO" pasted on top. It doesn't hold up once you actually audit accounts and compare what gets cited against what doesn't. Here's what we've found running GEO readiness audits across client sites in ecommerce, SaaS, and local services.

What GEO actually measures

Generative Engine Optimization is the practice of making a site legible to the retrieval systems that ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews use to pull source material before generating an answer. It sits downstream of two separate questions:

  1. Can the crawler reach the page at all? — a technical access problem.
  2. Once reached, is the content structured so a model can lift a clean, correct answer from it? — a content structure problem.

Sites fail on one or both. Fixing only the technical side without fixing content structure is the most common wasted effort we see.

The five factors that move the needle

1. AI crawler access

If GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, or Google-Extended are blocked in robots.txt — deliberately or by an inherited default from a site builder — the site is invisible to that engine, full stop. This is the single most common and most fixable failure we find in audits.

2. Schema markup

Organization, Article, FAQPage, and Review/AggregateRating schema give retrieval systems structured facts they can extract without inference. A page with correct schema and a page with none can have identical visible content and wildly different citation rates.

3. Answer-first structure

Models favor content that states a direct answer near the top of a section, in plain declarative sentences, before elaborating. Burying the answer under three paragraphs of scene-setting reduces the odds a snippet-length extraction lands cleanly.

4. Third-party corroboration

This is the factor most sites ignore entirely. LLMs weight claims more heavily when they're corroborated outside the site itself — Wikipedia, G2, Trustpilot, Reddit threads, industry press. A perfectly optimized page on a site with zero external mentions is still a weak citation candidate compared to a mediocre page backed by third-party validation.

5. Content depth and freshness

A single well-optimized homepage cannot cover the long-tail of questions your ICP actually asks. Sites with no blog or resource section have no surface area for the specific, narrow questions that make up most real AI search queries.

Frequently asked questions

Does blocking AI crawlers protect my content from being used to train models?

Google-Extended controls Gemini training use specifically; most AI crawlers used for live retrieval are separate from training crawlers. Blocking retrieval bots trades away citation visibility without necessarily achieving the training opt-out you intended.

How long does it take to see GEO results after fixing these factors?

Crawler access and schema fixes can be picked up within days to weeks. Content depth and third-party corroboration compound over months, similar to traditional SEO authority building.

Can a site rank well on Google but still be invisible to ChatGPT?

Yes. Google ranking and AI citation are measured by different systems with different weightings. A page can hold a top Google position while being poorly structured for extraction, making it a weak AI citation candidate.
