GEO Readiness: Make Your Website Easier to Discover and Cite

A practical website checklist for clear answers, trustworthy information and technical access across search and AI discovery.

The short answer

Make useful information accessible, accurate and easy to understand. These are sensible foundations for discovery; no file, schema type or content formula guarantees a mention by ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google.

What GEO readiness means

Generative engine optimisation is a name often used for work intended to improve how a business is discovered and represented in AI-generated answers. A readiness review asks whether your information is available, clear and useful for the questions your customers ask.

Separate what you can improve from what you cannot control. You can correct your service information and fix inaccessible pages. You cannot force an AI service to choose your business or cite a specific page.

Start with the SEO foundations

Google says its normal SEO practices remain relevant to AI Overviews and AI Mode, with no special optimisation or extra schema required. Pages must be indexed and eligible for a search snippet to qualify as supporting links, and appearance is not guaranteed. Read Google's guidance on AI features.

Begin with your important service pages. Can visitors navigate to them? Do they describe what you sell and where you operate? Does the mobile version show the same useful information? Fix basic access and usability issues before creating more files or adding markup.

Check access without confusing crawler purposes

Review robots.txt, indexing directives and hosting restrictions with your developer. Different automated agents can serve different purposes; a control for training is not automatically a control for live search retrieval. Check the current documentation of each provider before changing a rule.

For Google's Search AI features, Googlebot and Search preview controls are relevant. Google-Extended governs uses in certain other Google systems; it is not a blanket switch for Google Search visibility. The distinction is explained in the linked Google guidance.

Practical handover

Ask your developer for a list of important page URLs, their response status, indexing directives and any access restrictions. Ask what each proposed crawler-rule change is intended to do.

Answer real customer questions

Collect questions from sales calls, emails and consultations. Turn the recurring ones into useful sections on the relevant page. Explain the service, suitability, process, requirements and limitations in language a buyer can understand.

For an office-leasing business, useful questions might concern available locations, documents needed, viewing arrangements and how the shortlisting process works. Answer from your actual experience rather than publishing vague summaries that could describe any company.

A short answer followed by detail is a useful writing pattern for readers. Treat it as an editorial choice, not a proven shortcut to AI citations.

Make claims easy to check

Identify the business and provide consistent contact and service information. Explain who wrote or reviewed specialist material. Support numerical claims with context such as the period, scope and evidence available.

Use genuine reviews and approved case studies. Do not create invented testimonials or unsupported “best company” claims. Where an external source informs an article, link directly to the relevant source and distinguish its findings from your recommendations.

Use structured data accurately

Structured data should describe information that is actually present on the page. A blog article can identify its headline and publisher; business information should match the real organisation. Markup cannot substitute for useful content.

Do not add ratings or reviews that do not exist. Validate the code after editing it, and remember that technically valid markup does not promise a rich result or an AI citation.

Measure useful progress

Record the questions you care about and review a consistent sample over time. Note the tool, date, prompt and any cited page. A single answer is only a snapshot and should not be presented as a complete market-visibility score.

Alongside mentions, monitor search traffic, useful referrals and enquiries. Prioritise changes that also improve the experience for a real visitor. Review content when services, evidence or practical guidance change.

Questions business owners ask

Does good Google visibility guarantee ChatGPT citations?

No. These are different discovery experiences. A useful, accessible page can still be omitted from a particular answer.

Do I need a special AI file?

Google says extra AI text files are not required for its Search AI features. Do not treat a file as a substitute for clear content and sound technical foundations.

How quickly will improvements produce mentions?

There is no dependable universal timeline or guarantee. Track changes over time and assess broader search and business outcomes too.
